As mentioned in Dr. A.J. Khalil’s last blog post about body contouring, liposuction is a commonly used way to get rid of unwanted body fat. Many of our patients are surprised to learn that liposuction is also extremely effective (and safe) for slimming certain areas of the face. Typically, a facial liposuction procedure only removes a few ounces of fat but still produces great results.

Below, Dr. Khalil explains what you need to know about facial liposuction and its usefulness.

Neck, Chin and Jawline Liposuction

The neck and areas underneath the chin and along the jawline are notoriously hard to tone. Even patients of a normal weight may struggle with persistent fat deposits underneath the chin or on the neck that give the entire face a heavy look.

As long as the skin of the neck, chin and jawline has good tone and elasticity (i.e., the ability to “snap back” into place after surgery), liposuction can effectively sculpt these areas and create more attractive facial contour. Note that patients with excess fat and loose skin may need to consider facelift or neck lift surgery to treat the fat and skin simultaneously.

Removing fat from the neck gives it a more elegant shape. Removing fat from underneath the chin can eliminate the appearance of a bothersome “double chin.” Liposuction along the jawline can improve its definition and create a more angular look.

Cheek Liposuction

Believe it or not, another area of the face where liposuction can be effectively deployed is the cheeks. “Chubby” cheeks tend to be genetic and don’t respond to diet or exercise efforts. Removing a few ounces of fat from overly round cheeks can give the face a slimmer and more contoured appearance, enhancing the cheekbones.

Yet, liposuction in the cheek area is only appropriate if the skin has good elasticity. If it is not, other treatment options must be explored.

When performed by an experienced plastic surgeon, facial liposuction is very safe and effective. Depending on the patient’s specific needs, liposuction can sometimes be performed with local anesthesia and sedation (other patients may need general anesthesia). Tiny incisions are made in discreet places in or around the treatment areas. Small amounts of excess fat are strategically and carefully removed with thin, hollow tubes, and the remaining tissue is sculpted to produce an even contour.
