Some of the most frequently asked questions about breast lift surgery involve the post-operative recovery phase. To better prepare you for what to expect after breast lift, Dr. A.J. Khalil has provided some general information about the recovery process here. The information is meant to help set the stage for you to experience a smooth, speedy recovery.

Immediately following Surgery

After surgery, Dr. Khalil will dress and bandage the surgical incisions. An elastic bandage or support bra will be placed around your breasts to support the healing tissues and minimize swelling. You should wear the bra as advised by Dr. Khalil.

You will be monitored at the surgery center or hospital for a few hours and then released into the care of a family member or friend. You should arrange for your companion to stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery, as you may need help getting to the restroom or preparing meals or snacks. You will probably feel tired from the operation and should sleep or rest for the remainder of the day.

The Days After Surgery

In the days following surgery, bruising, swelling and soreness or tightness in the chest are common. You should take all medications, including painkillers, as prescribed to minimize discomfort and reduce the risk of complications. Drink lots of water and eat a healthy diet. Although it’s best to lay low as much as possible, taking short walks is good for your recovery.

You should sleep propped up on pillows and avoid sleeping on your stomach. You will not be able to raise your arms above shoulder level or lift anything heavy for a few days. You can bathe the day after surgery, as long as you avoid getting your incisions wet.

The Weeks after Breast Lift Surgery

You will gradually start to feel more like yourself in the weeks after breast lift surgery. You can return to work one to two weeks after surgery, and should follow Dr. Khalil’s timeframe for resuming your normal exercise routine. You will need to refrain from upper body exercises for at least three weeks.

Attend all follow-up appointments with Dr. Khalil so he can monitor your healing progress and answer your questions. He will advise when you can remove your compression garment and start wearing regular bras with underwire.

Gradually the swelling and bruising will resolve and your breast lift results will become more noticeable. Your final results should stabilize approximately three to six months after surgery.
