One of the most challenging decisions you face as a breast augmentation patient is picking the size of your implants. If you are like many other patients, you value the advice of trusted friends and family members who have implants and are happy with their results.
The problem with trusting other women to help you pick out your breast implants is that the same size implants can look very different on different women. Just because your best friend loves the size of her implants does not mean that size will look the same on your body. Read on as Dr. A.J. Khalil reveals why.
Every Patient Is Unique
The same size implants look different on every patient because no two women are exactly alike with the same breast characteristics. You and your best friend may appear to have similarly sized natural breasts, but you are not identical. The amount of existing breast tissue you have at the time of your breast augmentation is only one factor affecting your final result.
Other factors that affect breast augmentation results include the following:
- Height and weight – The same size implant will look different on a smaller, thinner woman than it will on a taller, curvier woman.
- Size of the chest wall – The smaller and narrower the chest wall frame, the larger an implant will look.
- Skin envelope – When placed under tight, dense skin, a small implant can look very round and fake; when placed under skin with more laxity, the same implant will not look as big or fake.
Tips to Find the Right Implant Size for You
Choose an experienced plastic surgeon
Before you decide to work with a particular surgeon, look at his or her gallery of before-and-after breast augmentation patients and ask yourself if you have a good feeling about his or her aesthetic sense. If you notice a surgeon’s gallery is full of “after” images where the breasts look unnaturally augmented, keep looking for another doctor.
Try implant sizers on
One of the most effective ways to find the implant size that works for you is to try on actual implants during your initial consultation. Bring a large bra and tight t-shirt to your appointment, where you will try on different sizes in front of a mirror. This will give you a sense of the implant size as well as shape and profile (i.e., how far the implants project from your chest) that will work best for your needs and goals.
