If your backside is not as voluminous as you would prefer, it is likely you have considered options for increasing its size. While diet and exercise can help to some degree with improving the appearance of the buttocks, the effects of these efforts are still limited by genetics. This is why cosmetic options such as Brazilian butt lift and butt augmentation surgery are so popular. Through these procedures, you can improve the shape and projection of your buttocks for a more flattering appearance. Dr. Khalil is an accomplished plastic surgeon who is passionate about helping patients look and feel their best. Keep reading to learn more about the differences between these two cosmetic procedures.

Body Fat vs Implant

One of the main differences between Brazilian butt lift (BBL) surgery and butt augmentation is the method used to increase the size of the buttocks. During a BLL, fat from your own body is used to enhance the buttocks. This has many unique benefits for patients, such as a reduced risk of rejection and natural-looking results. Alternatively, butt augmentation surgery involves the use of implants to achieve the desired result. This procedure may appeal to those who do not have enough body fat to harvest or those who want a greater degree of control over the size and shape of the buttocks.

Procedure Details

BBL is a multi-step process that first requires Dr. Khalil to harvest fat from the body. This usually comes from areas of the body that have excess stores of fat, such as the abdomen, thighs, or arms. The harvested fat is then purified and injected into the buttocks.

Butt augmentation surgery uses silicone-filled implants that are surgically placed either above or below the muscle. Dr. Khalil places incisions as inconspicuously as possible, often within the crease of the buttock. A pocket is made within each cheek before the implant is carefully inserted.

Recovery and Results

After BBL surgery, patients are fitted with a compression garment to control swelling and maintain the new shape of the buttocks. Many patients feel ready to get back to work and their regular routines after two weeks. You will not be able to sit or lie on your backside during this time, as doing so could cause pain and alter your results. BBL recovery also includes recovery from liposuction which is used to collect the fat.

Those recovering from butt augmentation surgery will also experience swelling and soreness; however, this should begin to subside within a few days. As with BBL recovery, you may be restricted from spending extended periods on your backside until you are fully healed.
