In the past, if a patient visited a plastic surgeon complaining of visible signs of aging, the solution was generally a surgical procedure. However, leading plastic surgeons like Dr. A.J. Khalil have more treatment options than ever to remedy wrinkles, fine lines, sagging skin and other signs of aging. Here, Dr. Khalil explains some of the ways he can erase signs of facial aging without surgery.

Botox

Perhaps the best-known of all non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments is Botox, which minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles to create smoother, more youthful looking skin. Small amounts of Botox are injected into the facial muscles that contract to form common facial expressions. The Botox temporarily relaxes the muscles and the overlying line or wrinkle becomes less noticeable.

Botox results typically last three to six months, and treatment should be repeated to maintain the effects.

Restylane

Like Botox, Restylane minimizes the appearance of unsightly lines. However, the products behave differently. Restylane is a dermal filler formulated with hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring component that provides fullness and cushioning to areas of the face that need it. Restylane is generally used to fill in lines, creases and other noticeable depressions; it can also plump up the lips and cheeks.

Restylane results can last up to nine months. Repeat treatment is recommended.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are another great non-surgical treatment to erase signs of aging without surgery. They are often used to improve the appearance of wrinkles, uneven skin pigmentation and other blemishes that are common with the aging process.

During a chemical peel, a special solution is applied to the skin, causing the damaged outer layers to slough off and reveal youthful looking skin. A series of peels is usually recommended to achieve the desired results.

Advantages of Non-Surgical Facial Rejuvenation

Non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments are extremely popular for several reasons.

Some candidates balk at the expense of surgery or the time they need to take off from work to have surgery and recover. Non-surgical treatment with Botox or fillers is a much more cost-effective option and requires little to no downtime.

Other patients feel nervous about undergoing surgery because of anesthesia. Injectables and resurfacing treatments don’t involve the use of general anesthesia (although topical numbing creams can be used to prevent discomfort).

Certain facial rejuvenation candidates are discouraged from having surgery because of their weight or health conditions. However, non-surgical treatment options offer them the chance at a younger appearance without the risks of surgery.
