Having children is one of the most rewarding experiences a person can have. Unfortunately, if you have had children you may be all too familiar with the physical toll pregnancy takes on the body. If you look at old photos of yourself and wish you could return to your pre-pregnancy glory, mommy makeover may be a good option for you. Below, Beverly Hills plastic surgeon A.J. Khalil explains what is normally included in a mommy makeover.

Mommy Makeovers Are Customizable

Mommy makeover is completely customizable to the unique needs of the individual patient, and yours will be tailored to your goals. Instead of recommending a prescribed set of procedures, Dr. Khalil will discuss the specific areas of your body that bother you after having children. He will also ask you to describe how you would like to look after surgery. Based on this information, Dr. Khalil will recommend the combination of procedures most likely to address your concerns and deliver your desired outcomes.

Procedures Commonly Incorporated into Mommy Makeover

Although every mommy makeover is a little different, they usually include some combination of the following procedures:

Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck): Pregnancy stretches out the abdominal skin and muscles so the stomach can accommodate the growing baby; but often, the skin and muscles don’t “snap back” after delivering the baby. Tummy tuck is an excellent way to address loose skin, separated or weakened muscles of the abdominal wall and excess fat deposits during a single procedure.

Breast lift: As the breasts engorge during pregnancy, the skin stretches out. But after pregnancy and nursing, as the breasts go back to “normal,” the skin may not contract over the smaller breasts. This can create a saggy appearance. Breast lift eliminates loose skin and restores saggy breasts to a perkier position on the chest wall.

Breast augmentation: Some women find their breasts lose volume after pregnancy and nursing and therefore elect to have saline or silicone breast implants placed to increase the size and fullness of their breasts.

Breast reduction: Other women find their breasts enlarge during pregnancy and nursing and never go back to their previous size. Breast reduction eliminates breast tissue, fat and skin to create smaller and more proportional looking breasts.

Liposuction: Pregnancy and the early years of motherhood can cause stubborn fat to accumulate not only on the abdomen but also on the hips, thighs and buttocks. Liposuction eliminates selective pockets of fat to improve the body contours.
